Adobe Design Achievement Awards (ADAA) – Semi Finalist 2010
D&AD Student Awards 2010 - Orion Books
Rishi Sodha (Creative Director, Designer & Web/Flash Coder)
This was my response to the Orion Books brief in the D&AD Student
Awards 2010. Based on H.G.Wells social novels, which are also semi-autobiographical, these books take the idea that as a reader if you dig
a little deeper you gain an insight into H.G.Wells himself and turned this
into a user experience, whereby the user has to engage with the books
via Augmented Reality to reveal the book titles.
Moreover a user can engage with the review markers on the back cover
to stream live review information from the web (text reviews from Amazon and video reviews from the website). This brings the benefits and experience of online shopping to your fingertips, fusing the digital and
real worlds together, and forever changing the way we buy books.
The Augmented Reality can be activated in three ways. Firstly at the point of sale, special display boxes will be provided that house a webcam and screen so people can interact with the books in store. If the point of sale displays become crowded, a user can simply use their mobile phone to interact with the Augmented Reality, as long as it has a camera. Lastly,
a large amount of books are given as gifts and in this instance the user doesn’t have a chance to experience the AR in store. Therefore an accompanying website is available at and those with copies of the books can interact with the AR engine online.
